Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to seize a surprise advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial equaliser in the dying seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing shootout victory.

The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
