Resurgent Medvedev Wins Maiden Championship in 882 Days
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hard surfaces
A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his first title for nearly 30 months with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open final.
The athlete, a former top-ranked player, has had a difficult year, achieving just one win at the big events and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in specific - caused him falling of the world's top 10 and finally separating with former mentor his previous coach.
Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, he has gradually progressed in the past month - climaxing in a closely contested competitive victory over opponent Moutet.
It is Medvedev's initial title since the Italian tournament and first on a hard court from spring of that year.
Success also means he has achieved 21 championships at twenty-one distinct events.
"For the first time I am participating in a tournament with my two daughters simultaneously, so to get a title is particularly special," commented world number 14 the champion.
"This championship is in honour of my second daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I got when my child my daughter was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his past six championship matches, comprising in that event earlier this year.
Medvedev's counter-punching strategy and regular outbursts on the playing surface had led commentators to question if his skill to compete at the top level was finished.
However the player has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, striving to come to the net and compete aggressively, reinforced by an better service.
The champion came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the challenging opponent, winning 4 of the final five games to gain the advantage.
Both players traded break points in the middle set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden professional championship, gained dominance to force a final set.
Moutet defended 4 initial break points in a competitive deciding set before the champion secured a break to that score to serve for the match.
Suitably, he secured the title with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman failing to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
