The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
